The RISE OF THE NAZI PARTY
The Nazi Party was first founded in 1919 as the German Workers’ Party by Anton Drexler. That same year, Adolf Hitler had attended one of its meetings. Soon, his energetic speaking qualities allowed for him to become a leader of the party. In 1920, Hitler implemented a 25 point program that would soon become the party’s basis. The program demanded work reform and dominance by the working class of Germany. Because Germany’s economy was still recovering from WWI, the Nazi Party gained many supporters.
The Nazi Party began its rise in 1924. A great amount of propaganda was sent out across Germany by the Nazis. In 1928, the Nazi Party ran for seats in Reichstag. However, they could only muster around 800,000 votes.
When the Great Depression hit in the 1930s, people began to turn to Hitler’s views. At that time, people were so desperate for economic stability that they went to support extreme rule. In 1932, the Nazis became a major political party, “receiving 37.5% of the votes. (mtholyoke.edu)” A year later, Hitler was selected as Chancellor of Germany. From there, he obtained tremendous support, and was able to rise in the ranks.
The President of Germany during Hitler’s reign was Von Hindenburg. With his death in July 1934, Hitler was able to become both the Chancellor and President of Germany. Now as the official ruler of Germany, Hitler set up a dictatorship. The German army swore their allegiance to Hitler, not Germany. The will of the people was expressed through Hitler himself, no exceptions. Hitler ruthlessly controlled propaganda and used it to present the Jews as an insignificant, inferior group. His strong grasp over Europe and his expansionist desire led to the loss of liberty for many Europeans during his reign.
